The children of Porechya thank you
It was 4 years ago when I emailed friends of New Thing and asked for help for the children of Porechya.
There’s a boarding school there, for 500 children with serious gastro-intestinal problems. (You can see my original photo report here.)
These young people have to drink significant amounts of water every day because of their medical vulnerabilities.
But the water back then was impure. They were in danger.
Purchasing bottled water was impossibly expensive.
They urgently needed a water purification system: particularly an electric boiler.
But when we talked with Director Larisa, she timidly admitted to an impossible dream: water fountains in the hallways.
After 20 years, I can’t recall ever seeing a water fountain in any institution anywhere in Belarus.
Here’s what happened: 17 friends gave to meet that need.
Pretty soon, the boiler, the purification system — and the fountains — were being installed! (Here are the photos.)
Last week, our “road team,” Oleg & Oleg (photographer Oleg Yarovenko and driver Oleg Kozovoy, husband of the late Great Kozovaya), returned to Porechya.
By now, it’s a whole new crop of kids ... but they’re still grateful — still benefiting from the generosity of those 17 friends of New Thing, from 4 years ago!
