is your love in action, inside the former Soviet Union

HereÕs a report from Doug Brendel to all who support or follow our New Thing ministry in Belarus...

How to make smiles

even in the face of cancer

New Thing brings Christmas cheer to the former USSR!...

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster dropped its deadly poison on the nation of Belarus 27 years ago — but its dirty work is far from finished.

The massive shower of radioactivity left many, especially children, to develop cancer and other medical problems.

Today, the original Òchildren of ChernobylÓ are parents — and many of their children are turning up with cancers and other illnesses.

But at Christmastime, we had the privilege of gathering hundreds of these parents and children for a special celebration ... ÒSmile!Ó

With the generous support of friends like you, our ÒResponse of the HeartÓ team supplied all the presents: candy and other sweets, cookies, fruit, and toys.

(Kids too sick to leave the hospital got presents, too.)

Anastasia had a severe form of blood cancer. Today, sheÕs healthy ... and a featured singer at the ÒSmile!Ó event. Igor the horn player overcame cancer too.

All of these young vocalists, from the town of Orsha, beat cancer as well.

This circus act was a gift for the children.

Ambassadors and other dignitaries attended.

Everyone donated money for the treatment of children with cancer.

Doctors from the oncological hospital received flowers and expressions of thanks from the families of children who survived cancers.

The woman we lightheartedly call ÒThe Great Kozovaya,Ó the beautifully humble leader of our ÒResponse of the HeartÓ team in Belarus, had mixed feelings.

ÒThis was the first time I felt sad because there was a full house,Ó she said.

ÒHundreds of children ... so many years after the Chernobyl disaster.

Awful trouble came to their families without an invitation.

Still, no matter what, during those few hours, they all were smiling!Ó

Thanks to all who have given to New Thing. You helped these smiles happen!

Thanks for journeying with us!

Much love,

Doug Brendel
